I moved in with my girlfriend but found out she showers fortnightly – I sleep on the sofa because of the awful smell

ONE man has revealed that he discovered his girlfriend only showers once every two weeks when they moved in together.

The boyfriend of three years says he loves his girlfriend, but her refusal to shower means he is sleeping on the couch to avoid the smell.

Taking to Reddit’s Am I the A*****e forum, the man said that in their three years of dating, he has never before noticed his partner’s lack of hygiene.

“I love her, but I did NOT know what I was getting into. She doesn’t shower frequently. At all. She showers at max once every other week,” he said.

Adding: “Before we moved in together I didn’t notice any particular BAD smell. Occasionally she had BO which is human. I’m guessing she would take her occasional shower before seeing me?”

The man said that after a few months, he felt compelled to intervene, as he couldn’t sleep in the same bed as her anymore.

“After a few months of trying to live with it, I was fed up. I had been sleeping on the couch because the smell was so terrible. I sat her down and tried to have a serious conversation about it,” he said.

He said that although he attempted to approach the subject gently, his girlfriend reacted angrily to his suggestion to shower more telling him it was “none of his business” and started crying.

The man has now asked if he should have handled the situation better, as he “feels terrible” about her reaction.

Readers have reacted in the comments of his post, with many stating that he shouldn’t feel guilty.

“Even most anti-chemical no shower people do once every 3-4 days. I feel nasty once I hit my 3rd day which occasionally happens because of toddlers. Two weeks is WAY too long” said one person.

Another commented: “I shower twice a day. I can’t even imagine how dirty she is showering so infrequently.”

“That’s nasty. She should be showering at least every other day. Maybe not washing hair depending on the person but she should at least be washing her body every other day if not daily.”
